Cotton Facts,  Fairtrade Certified Organic  Cotton- Gold Standard

Cotton has been cultivated in different parts of the world for over 5,000 years.  Over 60 per cent of the world’s cotton is produced by an estimated 40 million small farmers who are some of the poorest in the world. The conventional cotton textile supply chain has been subject to well publicised and documented social issues. Each year, cotton producers globally consume $2.6 billion worth of pesticides, more than 25% of the world’s pesticides on 2.5% of farmed land. This could hardly be considered as fair or environmentally sustainable trade.

Fou furnishings ®  has dual certified linens, Fairtrade and or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This is the gold standard of sustainability with respect to cotton. These trusted symbols give you assurance of environmental and social  responsibility from sowing the cotton seed through every stage to the sewing of your bed linen.

Not just a change in linens… a change in attitude

When we started the company, I wanted a change from mass market linen design and quality and a wholly ethical attitude to sourcing and pricing. That is why we source linens made from 100 per cent organic cotton. Organic cotton fibres consistently produce better quality yarns than conventional cotton, fair and ethical trade is part of organic textile certification and the cotton is free of chemical residues. We sell online to keep prices competitive and source only the very best Fairtrade and organic bed linen and towels we can find to ensure fair and sustainable trade, quality, craftsmanship and well being.

Buying Fairtrade makes a difference to the farming groups and their families where the cotton is sourced from. Even although we may not see the positive, tangible and sustainable differences.

Organic cotton farmers are doing their bit to combat climate change. By eliminating the use of manufactured fertilisers and pesticides, organic cotton growing produces up to 94% less greenhouse gas emissions.

Fairtrade organic cotton is a small but growing part of the market, let's keep it growing. Have a great Fairtrade Fortnight
